SANDRA BALD - Biography* An abstract painter with a love for the 'concrete world', Sandra Bald finds wonder in all things. Tracey Emins view that, I am a woman with many selves, and they all live inside of me " captures Bald's inclusive vision. Her commissions include portraits of people and horses, land and sea, and South Africa's greatest marvel flowers. It is not only the likeness but the character and mood of a being, place or thing that gives Bald's paintings their signature. Trained at Rhodes Fine Art School, Bald's journey has been itinerant, comprising ten years in retail, notably as the National Visual Merchandising Manager for Queenspark, before shifting to education as the Head of the Visual Art Department at Trinityhouse Randparkridge. Business is an art, as is education.
Early retirement, however, has allowed for a full embrace of her deepest passion painting. Bald's interest lies in the human condition, exploring the interconnection between nature, place, people and the self, moving through different life stages and situational changes.
These shifts are captured in mercurial depictions of light and a keen sense of the animistic nature of the world, in which all objects, people and places possess a spiritual essence, a soul. Her art is bold and contemporary. She works across a range of mediums but favours oils, using colour, texture and light as visual rhetoric from a feminine perspective one that finds beauty, joy and meaning in both the monumental and the everyday.
Born and raised in Kimberley in the Northern Cape, Sandra Bald is a wife and mother of three grown daughters. She now lives and works between Johannesburg and Plettenberg Bay.
